So my brand spankin new configured online 120HD Macbook only is really 111? Why is that? Also, before I even load my stuff from my external it is only 99.18GB Again, why would this be? 20gigs used before i even do anything....can I have a bad HD or does anyone know a solution. I even reinstalled the OS disks. Do i have to go into disk utility and do something? All input is apprectiated, thanks

When retailers sell you GB's... they are referring to 1gb=1000mb. Computers read 1gb as 1,024mb.

So you bought 120gb (120,000mb).... your Mac though reads 120,000mb as 117gb.

Then with the OS and iLife installed you have used another 6gb... taking you to 111gb.

yes the 111gb I understand, but why when I got her up for the first time it only said 99.18gb....I find that a little odd. I didn't add a thing yet

Actually it's not 117 but 111GB. Actual size compared to retail size is about 93% . So the 120GB advertised retail x 93% = 111.7GB

again yes I understand why it is 111gb drive but why when I started up for the first time it said 99.18gb remaining? Should I go into Disk Utility and "zero" my drive?? All input is helpful, thanks. I don't wanna start dumping stuff off my external onto here until I can figure this thing out.

Because Macs come with a whole lotta software pre-installed. You got a couple gigs just for the OS, then you have iLife (Garageband alone takes up around 3-4GB) and then you have all of the extra language packs that take up another 3-4GB. So having 20GB used out of the box isn't really that surprising.

20gigs though?? That sounds a little crazy for just the OS and iLife. How does a 120gb drive start at only 99gigs...sounds real silly...anyone else had this problem?? When you 1st got your 120gig drive Macbooks, were they only 99gigs??

Let me know please what you guys think I should do

New math? Last time i checked 111GB - 99GB=12GB. Remember you only had 111GB avaliable to you in the begining without any os. Then by the time you add osx, ilife and all the drivers and languages then it will use up about 10-12GB. Garageband alone is about 3GB, then the additional languages are 2-3GB. Everything adds up.

Agreed completely. There is an application called delocalizer that will take out all the languages that you do not need and get you 2+ GB more space.
