Question about Apple laptops

I heard that Apple is going to be releasing G5 imac around this September I also read that that would hint at G5 powerbooks. As of the current both ibooks and powerbooks have G4's. I can spend about 1400, so I figured ibook was the way to go. My question is that if they were to put G5's in powerbooks would the price remain the same, because if it did I would definatly spring for a 1600 12" powerbook instead of the ibook. Also can the ibook really run games like unreal turnament and halo on only 32 megs of video ram. I was told it could because of the OS, but does anyone own a new G4 ibook that knows from experience. If so please respond. I may wait until December in hopes that the ibook or powerbook will update. The last thing I want is to buy an ibook with 32 meg. of V-ram and then have an update 2 - 3 months later with 64 megs. I was hoping they would up it to 64 because ibooks have always been maxed at 32 for awhile now.

A thanks in advance.

I don't think that G5 Powerbooks will be available anytime soon, it consumes too much power and gets too hot.

And no laptop can have a VRAM update, only system RAM can be update, on actual iBooks as well as on Powerbooks to a maximum of 1.25GB.

You cannot uprade the videocard on a laptop, as it is built in the motherboard. That's for Macs and for PCs...

Actually you're wrong twice there:

The powerbook has a build-to-order option that lets you upgrade the vram from 64MB to 128MB. However this is only available on 15 and 17" models (i believe). But as it's a bto option i suppose it's technically not an upgrade ;)

Some specialised gamers pc laptops do have removeable video cards that can be exchanged for newer models from time to time, and with the card you also exchange the vram.

But they are exceptions.

To the original poster:

Don't expect an increase in ibook vram until november at the earliest, and even that is unlikely as apple needs something to distinguish the ibooks from the powerbooks...

as for gaming on the current ibooks: it's ok, but not good enough for hardcore gamers imho. I don't mind choppy unreal 2004 sessions, but then again i only play the demo ;)

The iBook probably will not come out with a G5 processor for hmm.. another couple of years.. in my opinion. Since it first needs to come out in the powerbook, which is a good 6 months to a year off at least until they actually ship, which means another year or two after that for the iBook to get it.
