iMac ram?

Hello everyone, I have an 17" imac core duo 2. Im looking at upgrading them ram to 3gb, but im not sure which is the right ram. I looked on the apple website and a 2gb stick of ram costs the same as my computer cost. Apparently this ram "2GB DDDR2 Kingston" is the right one for me to get. Is this right? And if not is there any that anybody could recommend?

According to mactracker both you need this type of ram:

200 pin PC2 5300 (667mhz) DDR2-SO DIMM

also the 800mhz will work also but it's more expensive for the same result as the above.

The ram 1nteresting linked to will work for both machines. And also apart from cricial, newegg are reputed to be a good place to get ram in the US.

Why is RAM from the Apple store about 4 times (quite literally, often more) more expensive than everywhere else?

Johnny...did you buy your ram from streetwise.

I am looking at ram also for the alumin iMac. the streetwise website hasn't been updated to search for ram for my imac yet...I guess I should just visit the store.
I could have bought 2 gig ram from amacroe for $180 (that's cost price too) but am still trying to figure out which brand i should get. wether it be Kingston or?

Hey Jacq, i got all the specs from streetwise, but i bought my ram from www.msy.com.au the website is really bad but i got a 2 gig stick for 145$. I think that my imac and your new imac take the same ram so that shouldnt be a problem

Kingston or Crucial ram seem to be the best brands. Well from comments of this forum.

I initially bought kingston ram from msy, installed it and the iMac recognized the ram but behaved strangely. I thought ram was faulty, so I returned it and they told me they didn't have ram for mac!i This time however...I have the actual part number and specs from the Kingston website.
I will try again. (I went to the Malvern store.)

You are best of buying from someone like Crucial.com

No, if it is 240 pin, it will not work. A square peg does not fit in a round hole. It must be 200 pin SO-Dimms.
Personally can not recommend looking on ebay for purchasing RAM. RAM is relatively cheap nowadays. Vesus saving $10, highly suggest sticking to reputable dealers.

Wouldn't say "often more", more like 'all the time more'. ?? Am not really sure why Apple feels the need to , imho, quite literally rape the consumer looking to upgrade their RAM (and Apple is not alone in this amongst the major PC manufacturers), just buy it elsewhere.

I've still got the 2 x 256MB 200 pin PC2 5300 chips from when I upgraded my MacBook. If I buy an iMac with 1GB installed, can I fire these in to take it to 1.5GB?
