I am pretty sure that open office runs off of Linux primarily so when it was added to Mac they made it run through terminal. You could close the window for the X11 terminal but exiting might cause Open office to exit as well.Other than that I haven't see any other ways to go about his

Considering a Mac... hopefully
Use neo office. I think's it's more integrated with Mac.

NeoOffice IS OpenOffice with an Aqua (Mac-like) interface. If you choose to run OpenOffice, you have to deal with X11 running in the background as you've noted.

OpenOffice is now resuming work on their own Mac-specific interface, but for the time being, you can simply use NeoOffice.

thanks for the info I think maybe I'll switch to neo office. Can anyone explain to me what x11 is? I see it running and on m dock, but it doesn't show up in my app file.

Here is a blurb from Apple about it.
You'll find the app in your Applications - Utilities folder.

Did the same when I first got my Mac - put OO on it then switched to Neo Office once I learned about it. You can leave X11 there, won't hurt anything, only takes 144KB space and won't open unless you start a program that makes use of it.
