Remote Access over the internet?

I was wondering if there is a program where i can access my parents mac via the internet and do maintenance on it? It would be a lot easier if I could "show" them how to instead of trying to explain it over the phone or driving up there.

Oh yeah, Both have OS 10.4

Two programs will solve this.

Vine Server for your Mom.
COTVNC for you.

Configure your firewall to port forward 5500 (default port) to your Mac.

Open COTVNC and from the Connection menu select listen for server, click start.

On your Mom's Mac have her open Vine and enter your internet IP in the reverse connection field and select connect.

You will see her screen and have control. This method is not encrypted and all keystrokes will be in clear text.

Using an SSH tunnel would fix this. A few more steps for both of you.

Do I need to close those ports once I am finished? And how do I change them?

Just a note: You can actually skip the vine server part if you're not sure about installing extra "confusing" software on your mum's mac:

Just go to sharing system prefs, enable 'Apple Remote Desktop' access and under 'Access privileges' check the box allowing VNC users to access the connection.

That just requires the port forwarding to happen on Mom's computer. Not always easy to walk people through that on the phone. Also not a secure way to utilize ARD VNC connections.

But certainly a possibility,...just open port 5900 on you Mom's end.

And,...no you don't need to close ports on the firewall between uses. If you use strong passwords and stop services there's no need to close ports.
