I want to sync my iMac with my new Phillips 42" HD TV so I can listen to all my chooooons on my 5.1 in my sitting room.

My internet however is via Ethernet and not through a wireless router. Does this mean I have to have a wireless router before I can do this?

Also, do you have to store things on the Apple TV hardware thing itself? - ideally, I just want to play things from whatever is in my iTunes on my iMac to my TV without storing things on the actual thing itself so I don't have to keep updating?

You need a router (wired or wireless).
The only thing you need to store on the AppleTV are photos. Anything else can be streamed from your iMac.

u dont need a wireless router to use a AppleTV, u can use it by creating a computer to computer network from your iMac.

just go to sharing in your system preferences and turn on internet sharing from ethernet.

i did this on an AppleTV at work, works perfectly.

The AppleTV looks like a sweet setup, I saw it at the Mac Store when I bought my ipod today. I think it worth it. I plan on buying one soon. I am not sure how it all works, the salesman said the ipod works wireless with it somehow. But I will research it more before I buy.
