• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I have about 100 DVDs that I want to rip and put on an external hard drive. I want to be able to view those movies through AppleTV or something similar in the future.

1) What application should I use to best rip the DVDs?
2) What is the best format to rip the movies into, taking into account: compatability, quality, and size?

Thanks!

1) Handbrake

2) There are presets in Handbrake that you can use to rip for best quality for a number of different devices. There is an AppleTV preset, but if you think you may get an iPod or iPhone and want compatibility, then you will want to use the preset for one of them instead. Quality wise, using any of the presets for a specific device will give you the best quality you can get while maintaining compatibility with the device itself.

Is there a universal format? ....that would work with AppleTV and other devices?

How is the quality of the AppleTV format?
How much size does a 4Gb movie take after ripped to AppleTV format?

Thanks!
