.flv files are flash-videos. You'll need a flashplayer if you want to watch these without browser.
This is one such program:

Haven't used any of these, so good luck! :D

Oddly enough, I don't recall needing to download anything to get quicktime to play .flv files.

On the other hand, it very well could be that I did need to download something like the aforementioned Perian, did so, and don't recall.

So, anyway the answer would be quicktime of some variant.;D

You can convert the format of the .flv file to a quicktime movie which can be played in quicktime.

You can do this by searching for an app called mpeg streamclip.

2) Download Perian, it allows QuickTime to play flv clips. (www.perian.org)

I second the use of Perian. As a newbie, I had a bunch of stuff I was bringing over, and didn't realize how much I had in WMV formats.

Perian lets me watch WMV videos in QT.

I cannot recommend it highly enough.

My experience is VLC can play some AVI files that Perian cannot ... just as an example, I have an old Michael Jackson video, AVI, which when played with Perian-enabled Quicktime doesn't have sound, but with VLC plays woth both video and sound. Same with some others .. but for most videos, Perian would be just right, but if something is wrong, VLC is priceless as a backup.
