HELP! Additional Hard Drive not seen on desktop

Hi, i have a G4 MDD powermac with full-ish 80gb hard drive and have installed a segate 160gb which i was told was ok.
the problem is that it is there but not on the desktop. I followed the instructions in my manual and thought that would be all i had to do!

there are differences but i am a technophobe and know nothing !!!!

Have you used the new drive before? If not, go to apps> utilities>disk utility and erase the HD. Once it's done, it should mount to the desktop. If it's full of goods, you will have to move everything to the original HD or make DVD's.
