Hopefully this isn't niave, but it is open source freeware, powered by (a) dedicated volunteers, and (b) paid personnel funded by major companies like Novell and Canonical who use the software regularly and see this as being in their best interests. I *think* this is how it works for Mozilla. Opinions from others (who may actually KNOW vs speculate like I am doing? :D )

I think Mac57 is about right. OpenOffice works in a similar way, getting support from Sun. The Eclipse IDE gets support from Sun too as well numerous others, the Netbeans Java IDE does as well.
