I'm interested in purchasing an iPod Classic but when I was playing with them in the Apple store I noticed that the controls seemed unresponsive and sluggish... has anyone experienced this? To anyone who has an iPod Classic what do you guys think?

I also heard they released a firmware update for the ipod classic- has this improved/fixed anything related to the sluggish/unresponsive controls?

We just had a long conversation about this. It seems as though many people are complaining about the menu lag on both the Classic and new Nano. The recent update hasn't fixed the problem. However, a similar problem was evident with the 5G iPod, and that issue was fixed by a firmware update released shortly after release.

If you want to buy it now, know that a update should be coming soon that will solve the problem.

It seems to be worse going from, say, a playing video back to the menu, or out of CoverFlow, but in general there's a half-second lag when choosing a menu item on the Classic. The Nano's Flash storage doesn't seem to eliminate the problem entirely according to a few other sites.

It's not a huge problem, but after the speed of my 2G Nano it's not very snappy at all. Like Kash says, an update will (hopefully) fix it.

Yeah, if you spend $349 on a classic transitions and controls should be fluid and smooth (unless its packed to capacity).

Coverflow is much better with the new firmware, actually, once all the album art is loaded. I have about 120-odd albums on it, and once they've loaded (it takes 5-6 seconds or so), Coverflow runs smoothly.

I guess I'm spoiled a bit because Coverflow on the iPhone is so smooth and fluid and any sort of lag or loading time just seems "off" to me.

Sure seemed like the update made things snappier to me. I do notice that backing up to the main menu from playing a video or listening to a podcast does stall for about a half-second. This probably wouldn't bother me at all if I hadn't come from an old 4G iPod that was really fast. I do hope a firmware update clears this up however...

My other complaint about the classic is how they've done something to cripple a large number of older accessories. Apparently the playing of video is not only no longer supported via the headphone jack, but playing from the dock connector now requires a special cable (which is currently only available from Apple, and has a 3-4 week backlog).

Yes, they removed the fourth contact from the headphone jack. Apparently they were stuck between two ways of doing video out, and each method would screw a different group of users, so they picked one (the most obvious one, IMO) and used the dock connector. AppleInsider mentioned it in either their new Nano or Classic review, I don't remember which.

Well I got a shiney new iPod Classic earlier this week (went for the black 80GB offering). One thing I'm really not happy about is the lack of pouch :) that Apple included pouch with my iPod 5.5gen 30GB white jobby kept my ipod looking perfectly new (great for the recent sale to help fund my new purchase).

I left the new item in the drawer for the rest of the week until a silicone case arrived for my new toy. I've just loaded my music and today is my first real chance to play with it - I love it. It seems fast enough and I like nearly all the little UI tweaks. Yeah there is a bit of lag sometimes, but it's a very small lag and I don't notice it that often.

The only things I don't like are that the hard drive seems to make a bit more noise than my other iPod - not loads of noise just every now and then I hear it 'click'... The other thing I really am irritated by is that my favourite iPod game (Texas Hold'em) doesn't work :( (I really hope I'll be allowed to download it for free if/when they update the iPod games)

Well it's not so much the fact that they removed the composite output from the headphone jack that bothers me (although it would've been nice to use that über-cheap cable); it's the fact that they've disabled nearly every existing option that uses the dock connector by requiring some new specialised cable. That means that none of the portable video docks (the ones with larger screens built-in) will work, nor will the existing solutions for connecting an iPod to one's television. At least this is what I gathered from last week's Inside Mac podcast...

Good luck on that. The existing games that have been reformatted for the Classic (such as Ms. Pac-Man) have to be re-purchased.

I love my classic

I recently bought a silver 80gb classic. I have around 1000 songs on it now and it works great. I had a black new 8gb nano and it didn't notice any lag @ all, but i returned it because of the hard drive only being 8gb. My classic does have a slight lag going from my (say artist or albums) back to the main menu, but nothing that is too noticeable. Coverflow also works great! I wouldn't discourage anyone from buying the classic due to this, especially if there will be an update to fix the small problem.

Yup, I noticed this lag with both the classic and nano when I tried them out at Best Buy. Hope it gets fixed soon!
