I bought a very good friend a MBP back in July, and it's been less reliable than I would have liked... I'm thinking that Applecare is a good idea. I couldn't afford it when I bought the machine; is it too late to buy it?

Right at the end of the year on both my ibook g4, iMac G5 and Intel Core Duo Mini Apple wrote me maybe 5 times offering me Apple care. I even got a physical letter from Apple reminding me. Very nice of them to remind me as I had totally forgotten!

They didn't happen to offer a discounted rate by the 3rd or 4th reminder did they? :D

For the price of the extended warranty on a MBP, it's hard for me to foresee myself wanting to fix a 2-3 year old computer vs getting a new one.

A good question.

To expand a bit I got mine from my work ( they bought it for me for school)
I don't have the receipt and I don't work there any more do I need the original?
