Well,
Sorry to say, i recently went to a powermac g4 dual.
I would have LOVED to keep my iMac g3 700, but i needed to do photoshop, and the g3 couldnt handle it. I still love my iMac though, but it sits in my basement, waiting for a new home.
I was so close to buying a tangerine housing for it too.

Oh, really? 700Mhz? That would be a decent upgrade for me. :D Feel free to PM on the off chance you're willing to part with it.

I bought a g3 500mhz imac off ebay last year to try out the mac scene. It was too slow for me so I got rid of it after several months but loved it. It was cute. But im back now - bought a new imac the other day. It was a good little machine.

The G3 first came out ten years ago. There's some speculation that even the latest G3s (they were sold until October of 2003) will not be supported in Leopard.

The G5 is not a current chip, either...no new G5 models have been sold for over a year now.

I've got 3 G3s... none of which I use. An AIO, a B&W and a PB. I haven't tried to load OSX on them but knowing how bad it is on my G4 (see sig...), I wouldn't bother.

I've got plans for the AIO, possibly involving the B&W logic board (but possibly not... I may use a G4 board I have sitting around, if it works, or pick up a MDD G4 board instead...) but I don't really feel like spending the money to implement them right now.

The G3 was a good chip though; iirc for applications that don't use AltiVec it was actually faster, clock-for-clock, than the G4.

I just built my parents one. I say built as the hard drive and motherboard and CPU were toast. They use and love it. I sold my G3 as the bus speed was to slow for what I wanted to do.

I have an old 9600/300 with a G3 400Mhz processor upgrade card in it. Pretty slow, but it works pretty well as a print and file server. It is running 10.4.9.

Interesting. I still have my 7600/133 with a Sonnet G3/400 CPU but it's running 10.2 Jaguar. It was my introduction to OSX. Made me want more! :D

yep!

Yeah, I've still got a3 G3s here! two B+Ws and a beige

One of the B+Ws is actually serving a 24/7 webcam feed from Apache the other is used as a test bed, the beige doesn't get out much these days :-(

the B+Ws are still surprisingly good amchines with Panther, and still usable with Tiger if you throw Ram at them!

I thought this thread was iMac G3's?

Anyway, I have the original Bondi Blue iMac G3 running at a speedy 233 MHz with a whopping 32 MB of RAM and a massive 4 GB HD. :)

I fire it up every so often to play some old games I have.

Actually 233mhz imacs work quite well with 10.2 and my old 333mhz one (which I still have) has 10.3 on it and it runs just fine. I still use my old 333mhz imac. It's downstairs basically as a print and file server. Cause I don't have a printer hooked up to my imac. Only the G3 has one attached.

And I do play a few old games on it still. Masters Of Orion 2 (OS 9) especially. I love that game. The PC version is in stretched mode for the video on XP on my new imac and I really don't like that.

I agree though my old G3 is finding less and less reasons to be useful. It's age showing I guess. I think I'll only replace it with my current computer when it gets replaced.

I have a G3 iMac, recently acquired from a coworker. Works well as an email and myspace computer.

But the keyboard input has been rather slow lately.

Any ideas on how to go about installing OS 9 or OS X on a G3 indigo 450 mhz with 20 gig hd and 128 megs ram? I just got it cheap off of ebay and it doesn't have an OS on it. Any suggestions would be helpful.

can I use in OS 9 disc I already have?
