I want to get a 1GHz 12" iBook but i was wondering one thing. I already have a 1.49GHz AMD PC. Will the iBook be faster overall (because of the different way the processors work)? I really wanna switch but i don't know about the speeds.....

Thanks in advance!!! :D

Mac OS X is kinda slow compaired to it's past OSes and Windows. The PowerPC is slower than x86 (it could be the other way around, I dunno, its what I have heard. And I wont trust a fanboy of Mac/Windows from what he/she says.)
It's really only a 49 MHz difference...

The real measure is the sidebus speed. iBook = 133mhz and Powerbook = 167mhz

Uhg...

Wow, not going to switch for a while.... I think apple needs to focus a little more on the iBooks/Powerbooks. I mean, 1GHz... thats slow compared to todays technology. There is like a single processsor for x86 PC's running at 3.4GHz. In my opinion apple is way outdated. Anyone agree. I will probably just end up getting a Windows laptop and a Apple destop.

Any other comments on the speed difference?

Thanks everyone. :)

Ever hear of the MHz myth? You know, clock speed doesn't mean crap? Well, it's true.

Thank you.

It's all about operations per clock cycle. It's why amd64's can beat p4's that are clocked 50% faster. Clock speed still does mean something though, i mean that's what you multiply by the operations per clock cycle to get the real performance of it. Just wait until next year when amd starts releasing dual core processors, intel and apple better be ready for whats coming. I'll be first in line for that quad opteron setup. :D

The CPU clockspeed is only one measure. The internal data path efficiency is much better on the G4 motherboards! And IMO only an idiot would buy a new windows pc in todays wormapalooza Virus scanners have been defeated by worm edits to the registry. Updates are daily now. Why would anyone wanna go through that hassle?

PC gamers, online gamers, buisness workers, people who need their apps to work and are not for Mac and other OSes.

You make me laugh.

;) just know OSX will not feel slow on your 1ghz ibook.

i have an 800mhz imac (ghz? ;) :D ) and going from 3.0ghz pcs to my mac i dont notice any speed slowing, though i feel a little less angry when using the mac ;)

i have a link rolling around about the mhz differences and % changes and what not... just when you get your ibook max out the RAM and it WILL be faster.

oh btw, relative to the mac/pc world... the ibook will be faster.

Off line gamers, no worms that way. Need their apps to work? Sure after all the virus and adware removing FUN still laughing?

Don't be an idiot and run your Norton AntiVirus, or your free McAfee virus scaner (<3 class action lawsuits).

If you know what you are doing, it's a piece of cake maintaining your system.
till laughing?
Indeed I am still laughing. If a PC gamer is not going to touch the Internet and just game online (I know someone who does this with Halo) there really isn't anything to worry about because there is no adware/spyware in games.

It's stupid to need so many 3rd party apps to almost keep your system safe, and to have to do it every day. IMO norton, *imagination here* And there is no fix to the open registry, which is only the equivalent of root

Ok. Its not like a PC gets a friggin virus everyday. i get maybe 2 viruses a year. And i run a lvie update one a week. No hassle. Anyways, back to the topic.... Most people were helpful and i thank you for that :). Graphite, it's hard to beleive that the 800MHz feels the same as a 3.0Ghz PC. You serious   ?

THANKS :)

Well Shawn, the better motherboard efficiency combined with the time not spent spyware scanning and virus updating Need I say more?

That is DEFINETLY NOT TRUE.

Now you witeshark. Running repair permissions and crons, and maybe running VirusShield for security exploits, is as easy as virus checking, spyware/adware removing, and running Windows Recovery. It may take a little while longer, but we all have to get outside once in a while.

hehe you guys love to bicker.

ready for some realworld tests?

i have a pc sitting next to me, runs fine, i have no adware because i have a girlfriend and dont search for porn all day. dont want viruses? then stop clicking on stupid things in your email that say "CLICK ON ME". i do get pop ups but im too lazy to get a browser that disables them. if you need your computer to run photoshop 1 second faster than me, you need to stop. take a deep breath. and look at life, and tell yourself there is more to life than a bunch of statistics you will never use to their full potential anyway. half of you who bicker over the speeds of photoshop and quake 3 have never even used them. and no matter if you are pumping 200 fps in quake 3, you're still going to die to my 100 fps... why? because i can play the game. so stop worrying about the tests, the speeds, the viruses, the adware, and get on with your life.

here are a few tips for a healthy computer:
1. stop looking up porn -> no adware
2. dont click on everything that sounds cute in your email -> no viruses
3. go buy photoshop and learn to use it -> will learn that rendering a pic 1 sec faster means nothing, you still suck at making things
4. play some first person shooter games for days at a time -> will find out that latency > fps any day... and i will still kill you on a pentium 2 as long as my ping is under 50ms

have a nice day :)

ps. just to add some fuel to the fire, all your tests for the g5 are old...time to do them again with the 2.5ghz :)
