Adding a Toolbar?

OK, I have had my Mac for a while now and I finally want to get rid of desktop icons because it makes my pretty Mac look a bit messy.

Is there any way to get a drop down menu which links to a folder and sits just next to the blue tooth logo? This would be really good as I would always be able to access this folder.

Put all the desktop stuff in a folder and put it on the dock next to the trash can after dropping it in the Documents folder in Finder or wherever you keep your stuff. Click and hold on the folder icon on the dock to access a pop up menu of everything in it.
