Is there any way to disable the (highly irritating) "feature" that causes every Apple laptop I've ever used to go to sleep the instant you shut the lid? It'd be nice if there was...

There's no built in option to disable this. There is a third party solution, though I'm not sure if it works with the latest version of OS X. It's called InsomniaX if you want to look it up.

I would strongly suggest you do NOT disable this feature. As you know the MBP gets fairly hot when it operates. The keyboard area is an area where heat is lost. So, if you close your lid and keep your computer on, not asleep, then you are risking overheating your computer. Plus, you can damage your screen (rare cases) but it does happen.

If you search this forum about Heat and the MBP you will find tons of threads.

I think it's best to just let the computer do what it's been made to do. It only takes a second to wake back up after it goes to sleep and it's probably better for your computer overall.

If you're irritated by the fact that you have to startup your computer, then put it to sleep to get it going with the LCD closed, you can start it up closed to avoid that. Just start it up and immediately close the LCD and it will register that the LCD is closed when it starts.

I am new to apple, and I am also wanting to disable this feature. I don't mind the start up time, what i mind is that it disconnects my wifi. So downloads or other apps can't continue if i close lid.

advise????

I would leave the lid open and then turn the brightness all the way down so that the display backlight turns off. That's what I do.

This way you don't put additional, unnecessary load on the fans, which can result in reduced service life.
