I do, I think the dock takes up considerable space at the bottom of the screen.

Personally I like to hide the doc. Just cause I don't like the doc being there always. And I can use it hust when I want. And so ti doesn't interfear with what I'm doing.

But I think to have the doc visible always or just when your using it is really a personal pereference.

I don't hide mine.
I have customized it with pretty icons and don't want it to be hidden away:)
However sometimes it gets horribly crowded down there on a macbook

no.

space is not as much of a problem on a wide screen display when you mount the dock on the left (or right) ...

i've tried this solution but the vertical length of the screen doesn't really accommodate my ideal icon size in the dock (when they're not magnified). plus, i'm kind of used to seeing the dock at the bottom of the screen since it has always been placed there as default since OS 10.1

hmmmmmm

I switch back and forth. Depends on how I feel or if I've put something new on my dock. It doesn't bother me to be on all the time though.
Most people who see my set up for the first time are drawn to the dock and really like how it expands when the mouse runs over it so I like to show it off.
They also like how it appears with the mouse too, so either way is a "show-off" plus! :D

Agreed. For those with high-res widescreen LCDs or multi-monitors, Just put the dock at the sides. For lower res monitors (especially for those still using 1024x768 LCDs), I would hide it to get more screen space.

I keep mine hidden at the bottom, there's not really a reason to keep it up when I'm not using it, and it takes up a lot of valuable space.

I want mine on the left but I think it interferes with Adium too much. If I put Adium on the right then it covers up my HD and a few desktop icons.

I really like how the dock looks at the bottom but I generally keep it smaller on the right, not hidden. It's easier access and takes up less valuable space there. (I don't do desktop icons, since I don't have to.)

That's exactly my situation.
