I'm currently watching the US Open Tennis where Andy Murray (who is Scottish, y'know like Braveheart, lives in the US and is coached by an American) is playing Lee Hyung-Talk (who is Korean and lives in Korea).

For some reason the crowd (Mostly New Yorkers I assume) has decided to support Lee and every time he wins a point they shout out vociferously ....

USA .... USA ...

***?

Is anyone not British automatically American these days?

I'm not sure why, but that is pretty funny. Not only because they're chanting "USA!" for a Korean (Is he from North or South Korea?), but also because there's that many New Yorkers watching Tennis. It isn't the most popular sport here in the states.

I think USA! USA! and obscenities are all you're allowed to shout at an American sports event. Shouting anything else will get you on the CIA's watch-list for being un-American.

Or something like that :p

I'm assuming he is from South Korea otherwise it would be unlikely that he would be playing in the US Open.

I assumed they were New Yorkers because that is where the US Open is held. They may be US Koreans who just happen to live in New York of course.

Well Lee just won it so it doesn't really matter but I just found it strange that I, an Englishman, was supporting a Scot whilst the Americans in the audience were supporting a Korean!

Good point. I wouldn't expect to see someone from the hermit kingdom in it, but I figured I'd ask.

The US Open is in Queens, next to Shea Stadium. The facility is pretty spectacular and it's become a big event in the area. (I lived on the NY/CT border for a while and attended one year.) I think a fair amount go because it's the "in" thing but they couldn't care less about tennis.

I, for one, actually enjoy watching tennis - probably because I play racquetball. I would love to go and watch the matches there. I keep hinting around to my wife, but no luck and no tickets :Angry-Tongue:
