As I am new to macintosh I have no idea what is a good USB2 drive for them. Or if all USB2 drives are comptabile with OS X 10.2 + then does it really matter which one I acquire? Or is it simply down to individual opinion of what's hot and what's not?

Could you please clarify what type of drive you are looking for? Do you want a USB flash drive, AKA thumb drive or keychain drive? Just about any flash drive will work with OS X; just plug it in. I've never seen much difference between the various flash drives out there, and every one I've tried (Sony, Disk On Key, and a couple of no-name units) have worked on my Mac without any problems.

I think its probably called flash drive or pendrive. If they all work with OS X + then I guess it comes down to what style you fancy then.

Cheers
