Getting files from 8.6 to X

My friend just bought an iBook last night. He has a beige G3 running OS 8.6 and needs to connect to it with his new iBook running Panther to get some files. He says he gets a "unexpected loss of connection" error when trying to do this. Any ideas how this can be done?

I wasn't exactly sure where to post this as it could fit in several different forums.

What medium is he using to connect? Wireless, ethernet, USB, firewire? We need details to help.
