I'm looking for some kind of DeviantArt, but for photography only.
Preferably one with a large and active member base.

Smugmug like eric says is awesome (but it isn't free). For free you'll want Flickr but I personally don't like the way you get to organize your pictures there.

Flickr is more of a upload-site only, no? It doesn't have forums etc.
SmugMug looks good though. I'll take the trial to see if I like it or not. Thx for the tip :).

SmugMug has its own forum, yes. And there are very knowledgeable people there. You can see my photos by clicking the link in my sig. See how you can arrange your photos in galleries? You can move photos at will, rearrange galleries, create, delete them as you wish, it's very cool. You have a few themes to choose from to change the look.

Have had an account for 3 years there and don't regret it at all: I do recommend the place to anyone.

www.thephotoforum.com is a GREAT website. I spend a ton of time no there and am self taught entirely using posts from that site. They have a critique section where the other members can tell you how to improve (you have to have the tough skin to accept the bad too). Some of those members that give you advice are photographers with 20 years of experience or more, and a few are professionals.

Here's how I've improved:
December 2006 upon purchasing my camera:

If you're looking for image hosting you have your answer. If you're looking for good forums to help develop your photography skills try my 2 favorites:

www.fredmiranda.com
www.photography-on-the.net

Both have knowledgeable active member bases. Plus fredmiranda.com has an excellent buy and sell forum for all the kit you'll need.

DPChallenge is nice

http://www.Lightcafe.net is a new site for photography critique and discussions

www.Pro4um.com is a pro only site with a hefty annual fee.

I have heard of another new site called photocamel or something to that effect that is supposed to be pretty active.

My links are all forums, but you can post your own photos in their galleries:

www.dpforums.com - All Photo site
http://photography-on-the.net/forum/ - Just for Canon cameras

Both sites have amazing photographers as well as good advice.

Photography on the net (POTN) is a Canon DSLR site, but there's users that use every kind of camera and the user base accepts anyone. They're not as biased at the above poster makes it sound. I believe they have nearly 100k members and have a huge active user base. Definitely a good resource no matter what type of camera you use.
