• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

hello-

i am going to begin editing some video footage that I really do not want to lose at all. I am somewhat new to iMovie, so I am a little nervous about experimenting with everything. my question is, iMovie would never erase what's on a tape, right? whatever footage I play with on the computer would never affect the tape one bit...or am I wrong?

thanks!

Plug in firewire cable into Cam and Mac (Mac is Cam spelt backwards :))

Click on import video in iMovie. Turn on Cam. Click import button. No video gets deleted on the Cam.

You can save back to a camera. That could overwrite content already on the tape. The safe thing to do is remove the camera after importing your video. It isn't likely you could make that mistake, but just be safe.
