Hi there everyone!

I recently added fonts to Font Book. Now MS Word will not run. When I open it, I get ______ font is corrupt and needs to be removed. Then I have to click OK and get a long pause with the disco ball and the message comes back with the next font in the list. Since I have over 400 now, this takes a while and in the meantime I can't use MS word.

I went into Fontbook and disabled all the new fonts and relaunched Word, but it the same error message comes up.

If you're wondering I have NeoOffice and gave up on it b/c it crashed too much (reinstalled twice) and I had to save two versions of everything I did so I could share docs with other people.

If the recommendation is to get Suitcase, will you send me a link, b/c all I could find was Suitcase updates and I need the whole thing.

And how difficult is it to get rid of Fontbook? I've read here that messing with your fonts -disabling them or resolving duplicates can cause endless problems....

Thanks all!

Well as a temporary fix you can download the iWork08 trial for 30 days. You can also try OpenOffice. I'm sorry I don't know the answer to your question, but I hope I helped! Good Luck!

Thanks Ryan13, your link fixed it. It was several steps and took a little while b/c I had to reboot, etc., but I started Word back up and no error message! Yeah!

BTW, I thought I did do a google search, but I must not have looked hard enough! Thank you very much!

It's baaaack.

Well the evil corrupt fonts message is back. I deleted all the cache files as recommended in Ryan13's link above and it worked for a day or so. Probably until I rebooted. And this AM the problem was back. I rebooted in safe mode, but that didn't fix it either. waaaaah!

Has anyone tried Linotype FontExplorer X ?

Linotype Font Explorer is the best program that's been released over the last couple of years! And it's free :)

If you have problems run the cache clearing options in the drop down menu.

Move the FontCacheTool

This font error in Word plagued me for a while before I finally moved the FontCacheTool. (Tried everything else in that article referenced above; nothing worked permanently.)

Path: Microsoft Office 2004 > Office > Support Files

Create another folder in Support Files named 'Disabled', then drag FontCacheTool into it. This will cure forever the evil font error.

Drawbacks: If you actually DO have a corrupt font, Word won't know it. But then again, FontBook will validate if you ask it to:

Open FontBook; select All Fonts in the Collection; then select all of the fonts in the Fonts pane; select Validate Fonts from the File menu.

FontBook will tell you what's broken.

BTW, hang on to that FontCacheTool. If you need to update Office or Word, move it back into the Support Files folder loose.

For what it's worth -- and this is ONLY the opinion of an OS X Support Specialist (supporting a network in Arizona of roughly 170 Macs) -- FontBook is better than Suitcase. I've used them both -- Suitcase for 7 years; FontBook for 5. Both have advantages and disadvantages (seems like everything does, eh?), but FontBook, over the long haul, gives me less trouble.

And neither FontBook nor Suitcase would have any bearing on this Word 2004 font error. This is a bug that neither Microsoft nor Apple can explain, mainly because it doesn't happen on every install, or on specific platforms.

Then again, it's stuff like this that keeps IT types employed. (Maybe that's why it happens:)

Anyway, if you want Word to quit bugging you about fonts, moving the FontCacheTool is the only sure cure, albeit with a caveat or two.

Thank you! I haven't (fingers crossed) had this happen since I installed and ran Lynotype. If it happens again, I'll be sure to use your procedure. I really appreciate your help. It's funny that I haven't seen more posts about this. It's a devil of a problem, esp since no one knows why it happens. Thanks again and have a good one!

It's baaaack. AGAIN.

corrupt font message is back. Apparently linotype only fixes it until I shutdown and restart. :(

So I am even more grateful to you gdane for posting this fix. I just did it, so next time I restart I'm sure I will be a much happier camper. :)

Thank you!
