iPhoto/aperture slit gallery in two locations

So I am currently using iPhoto but considering the switch to Aperture. One thing I am interested in doing is splitting my library into to locations. It is getting really big, 40gb+ so I want to have some pictures stored on my external and others stored on my internal drive. Is there an easy way to do this?

In iPhoto you can set up multiple libraries . Just launch iPhoto holding down the option key. You'll be asked if you want to make another library.

I'm not sure about Apeture or how this works with iPhoto 7 as yet
