A Major updare from 0.8.5B1

Some of the changes include:

* User experience is improved through a re-envisioned Mac interface and a Windows interface that's been rebuilt from the ground up.

* Picture quality is improved through better image scaling, better deinterlacing, new filters for denoising, deblocking, inverse telecine, and new presets devoted to high quality settings.

* Speed improvements due to updated copies of x264 and ffmpeg. This includes improved multi-threaded encoding for the iPod.

* Compatibility is improved through new presets for devices like the iPhone and PSP. As well, HandBrake now supports DTS as an audio source and has limited support for .VOB and .TS file containers as input. Most excitingly, HandBrake can now output to the Matroska (MKV) file container.

* Stability has been improved due to countless bug fixes. (Including audio drop and mp2 issues). Handbrake also has optional support for MP4 files larger than 4 gigabytes.

What I find ironic is that I know the person who basically designed the new interface that's being used and gave it to the Handbrake developer before HB went belly-up the first time a year or so ago.

The sad thing is that he is getting no credit for his work. That's sad in an open source project.

I'm not sure if his name is listed in the credits yet, but I know he has been present and mentioned in both the forums and the IRC chat (which is really where everything gets done). I don't know how they work that part of the project to be honest. If that's true though, it's sort of sad.

What's the advantage of using the new iPhone preset? Doesn't it have the same capabilities as the video iPod?

According to Apple it does. I assume that the preset is just optimized to give you the best quality/size for the iPhone.

This happened the last time they did a release. Their was something wrong with how they setup the file on the server. Get rid of the .bz2 extension on the end, so it's just .dmg. It should work fine then. It did for me.

Ya, it's only certain download servers. The devs are chasing it, but not having much luck. It also only appears to happen with Safari.

re-downloading now. Thanks to baggss for the tip on how to deal with the failed install. And thanks for the heads up on the new version being released. I never would have realized that.
