There are a few Firefox extensions that will do it. But, personally, I use the mediaconverter.org website. You simply provide it with the URL of the YouTube video, and what format you want the file in, and it sends you an e-mail with a link (or you can check the status online) to the converted file. I download from YouTube so rarely that I find this to be a good solution for me.

why dont you just edit the url lol... where it says

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhZY7BOY040

change that to /v/

then where it says

http://www.youtube.com/jp.swf?video_id=FhZY7BOY040&eurl=&iurl=http%3A//img.youtube.com/vi/FhZY7BOY040/default.jpg&t=OEgsToPDskJR-2JzpRYl_A9DmIvx3Fip

change that to get_video

I am presently using PodTube.

It is Shareware - though, for some reason, when I downloaded it, it just worked without asking for donations. It's very quick and easy to use, though won't do batch processing. It converts the files to .mp4 format automatically and also appends the correct name to the file.

Alternatively (though you have to manually rename your files with this method) you can enter the uTube URL into KeepVid and once you have downloaded all your "get_video" files, drag them into isquint and batch process them into .mp4's. Again, it's fairly quick and you can alter the output quality etc.

That website works great for me. And totally free too. It's not an app but a website based thing that will encode the video into the type you want and alloow you to download it. And it ecen has an option for audio only as mp3 too. As well as a few video options also.
