In another thread, somebody mentioned that Macs don't have a BIOS, but instead have something called EMI. Unfortunately, when I tried to search Google for the answer, I was flooded with results discussing Apple and EMI (the music company) and DRM controversies, etc.

If somebody can shed some light on this, I'd really appreciate it.

Macs use EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface). Think of it like the next generation of BIOS. Eventually ordinary PCs will start moving in this direction as well, but Apple was an early adopter when they went over to Intel processors.
