• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Let's say both my external HD's are full and I want to delete my brothers wedding video because I have no use for it - however, they may one day require a new copy - can I transfer the information to disc so i could reload it one day and make editing adjustments to the film?

sure. download Burn for OS X and burn it as Data, or if it's a DVD image file bur it as a DVD.

Once you've made sure that the file is there, and good, you can delete from your hard drive. A memory like that, you may want to burn a couple.

One thing I bet you haven't thought of is to make a backup on minidv tape. Then you will always have a copy to make more from.

^ You mean I could put an edited movie onto DV tape, kinda like a reverse process?

How can you do that?
