I just bought a new 20" imac. I hear people referring to imacs as G4, G5 etc. Since this is a new design, is it considered a G6? I am new and this is my first mac ever.

Thanks. Newbie question

no.

G4/G5 were the PowerPC processors in the respective Macs. Since Apple switched to Intel, they are now called by year, for example this is the '07 iMac.

Well, not exactly the 07' iMac. This iMac is called iMac (Mid 2007). :)

The CPU is called whatever Intel calls it. Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, ETC.

Actually, this would still be a Generation 3 iMac, but a second or third design revision. I think the OP got the G in G4 or G5 mixed up with "Generation".

You don't, you say:
He I just bought an iMac!
and then they ask which:
you say: bla bla" with ...Ghz etc. etc. the newest Black one

and over a year or 2 you say: "I have the Imac Mid '07"

I think it sounds fair

I don't know anyone who says "I got an '07 iMac" either. ;)

Apple has been using years to officially designate Mac models in the support area since the iMac G5 so it's not an Intel thing.

I just refer to them by processor. G4, G5, Core Duo, Core 2 Duo, and now I guess Santa Rosa, right?

iMac Core Duo or iMac 2006 (or whenever. I can't remember the year as easily as I can the processor updates.)

99% of the time people will refer to iMacs by processor and speed.

Ex. I have a 2.0ghz C2D iMac. I have the 2.0ghz G5, etc.

I doubt people will refer to "Santa Rosa" as that's just a code-name from Intel and not the actual processor name.
