is it possible to do without an external sound card? would it be able to plug into the headphone port? and if so what are some good speakers to get? I like very clear sound, and lots of bass. I currently have the Logitech Z-5300e 5.1 speakers for my PC but I would like to get a 2.1 system for the laptop.

Most 2.1 systems just plug into the headphone jack, so they will work fine on a MBP. I have a Logitech 2.1 system that was inexpensive ($50) and sounds great.

haha yea, I currently have the Z-5300's I love them but I would like a 2.1 for my laptop so I don't have to buy an external sound card, and also its a bit more portable....

i think the ones which are one part but still 2.1 would be better for you..i think yamaha and philips are making that kind of speakers..

and as far as i know the audio out in mb isnt just for the headphones,it is an optical out and u can use it with anything u want..but it is wiser not to expect a full quality performace from it with a 5.1 or 7.1 system..:)

well actually you need an external sounds card to plug in more than 2.1 speakers... I can plug in 2 channels and a sub from my Z5300's. Those creatures look nice, how is the quality and volume on them?

Sorry to bring back an old topic, but in case anybody was wondering I figured I would give some closure.

I went to Best Buy today and I impulse bought a set of speakers that sounded nice... heh WOW is all I can say. These are probably the greatest speakers I have ever heard.

I bought the Klipsch Promedia 2.1 and just wow. Gorgeous sound, amazing base, clear highs. Great for gaming as well. Sorry I just had to share my joy with everyone else.

Oh and by the way price wise... not bad it was like $177.00 USD after Tax. I'm sure I could have got them cheaper online but I don't like to wait.

Klipsch speakers enjoy a very good reputation. A friend of mine has the 5.1's and they are absolutely wonderful. Enjoy!

Hey how do those compare with the Logitech Z2300? Since i can't listen to either of them before buying, the decision has to be made according to reviews....

I don't know about the 2300's but I also own the 5300's on my PC and I have to say the Klipsch have much much better sound quality. Also the sub actually puts out more power than on my 5300's yet it is much smaller and more portable.

I can say I highly recommend the klipsch.
