Is it possible to buy the AppleCare plan from the states (because they're a lot cheaper) if the Macbook (of a friend of mine) was purchased in Japan? Will they accept the US registration code and will Apple asks for AppleCare's proof of purchase when there's a problem?

From the US AppleCare agreement:
AppleCare Protection Plan (U.S.) Sec. 7d said:
This Plan is offered and valid only in the fifty states of the United States of America, the District of Columbia and Canada.
In short, the plan details can and likely will vary depending on the country it is intended for. The U.S. plan is not valid in Japan as laws will differ, so if your friend wants it he will have to purchase the Japan plan.

Thanks for your quick and helpful response. I'm still rather confused by this quote from AppleCare FAQ:

Where can I purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan?

The AppleCare Protection Plan is available at the online Apple Store, Apple retail stores, and many Apple Authorized Resellers. Apple recommends that you purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan in your country of residence, because each AppleCare Protection Plan has terms and conditions specific to consumers of the country or region in which the plan is offered. Please see the AppleCare Protection Plan Terms and Conditions for complete details.

Why did they not "advise against" purchasing AppleCare from a different country, and if they recommend buying it in the country of residence (what if the buyer bought the Mac during vacation in a different country?

The computer will remain essentially the same (barring language, keyboard differences, etc).

The governing laws regarding consumer purchases, warranties, repairs, etc will not. Therefore, the AppleCare program can and most likely will change according to the country of residence.

Apple US, will only ship to the US anyway; I think they are just advising against in-store sales for people visiting that country.
