I'm running Panther and see instances of a file called .DS_store literally everywhere (the desktop, in all folders, etc.) and was wondering a) what it is and b) if there's any way to hide or get rid of it.

the .ds_store file is used by the system in order to remember where you placed windows and other items on your desktop.
