I think what everyone forgets about Microsoft when they have a go at them is this.
Windows has to run on every IBM-Compatible PC.
Its a much harder thing to do that writing for a specific set of hardware. You've got to give them credit for that. It takes far longer to do these things.
No, it doesn't. Microsoft could easily drop legacy support in Vista. (What are its customers going to do...switch to Mac OS X?!)
Seriously, Microsoft has more than enough money to continue maintaining XP for legacy hardware and applications, while making Vista available as a clean, modern OS free of legacy APIs and baggage. Apple made a big leap six years ago, and has benefited tremendously in both the minds of the public and the sales race.
