Like I said I am new to mac, but it seems when installing things nothing seems to work.

What is the problem with me, I downloaded the program and it put 3 folders/files on the desktop
1. amsn recieved files...What's this?
2. amsn 0.97 rc1...What's this?
3 amsn-0.97rc1.dmg...What's this?

Sometimes I get frustrated with this whole mac thing and i apologize, but why aren't things easy like with a pc?

How can I get this to work?

Thanks

Are you talking about MSN instant message? If so, you're better off with Adium on the Mac. Just download from http://www.adiumx.com/, uncompress the downloaded file, open the disk image, drag the ducky-looking icon into your applications folder, start the app and configure your screen name and password and you're up and running.

I'm sure there'll be others chiming in.

I just checked out adium, but it does not support video chat.

It's kind of funny, the people at the mac store said "oh yes of course you can video chat." stupid Jon should of asked "with people from msn?" like i said as much as I like the mac there are things that just bother me.

So any help would be great.

Oh yeah sorry for using the bad word;D

double-click the .dmg file and it will open in a new Finder window. Drag the application from there into the Applications folder to install it. I dunno what to do with that received files folder.. I would delete it.

Just do what the poster above me said. I have it here and it works. With aMSN OSX does video chat on MSN. The person at the Apple store told you the truth, Macs DO video chat. Most though use AIM or .Mac. Yahoo's client like I said another post does Video also.

That files folder it places on the desktop for when someone sends you a file. I am sure there is an option in the preferences to move that somewhere else.

Below is a pic of aMSN's preferences and I changed where that save location is so no folder on my desktop.

What is the problem with me, I downloaded the program and it put 3 folders/files on the desktop
1. amsn recieved files...What's this?
2. amsn 0.97 rc1...What's this?
3 amsn-0.97rc1.dmg...What's this?

For #1:

The folder "aMSN Received Files" is a folder that aMSN created.
By default, it's where the files you'll receive from other people will go.

As dtravis7 said, you can change this in aMSN's Preferences:
aMSN > Preferences...
"Others" tab
Change the path next to "Received Files folder".

As for #2 and #3...

Seems like you don't completely understand how installing applications works on Mac OS X.

Here are the steps whenever you want to install an app:

First, most apps will come in a DMG file.

Then...

installing_an_application_1.png

installing_an_application_2.png

installing_an_application_3.png

installing_an_application_4.png

If you understand the above, then now you should know what to do with #2 and #3.

Here's what should be done:

Double-click amsn-0.97rc1.dmg (the disk image).

This will make amsn 0.97 rc1 (the Volume) appear on your Desktop.
It should open automatically in a new window.
(If it doesn't, double-click amsn 0.97 rc1.)

Inside that window, you should see aMSN (the program itself).

Like the picture above says, do not open aMSN in here.
(If you have, quit aMSN.)
Instead, drag aMSN out of the window onto your Desktop.

You can then put aMSN anywhere you want.
It doesn't matter on a Mac where you put your programs (for most programs).
But of course, it's best to put it in the Applications folder; it's at Macintosh HD > Applications.

Now, you can Eject amsn 0.97 rc1 (the Volume); right-click > Eject.

And you can now delete amsn-0.97rc1.dmg (the disk image).

Do you have to have msn messanger running also, or just this program?

Just aMSN.

aMSN is a MSN Messenger clone. It's a completely separate program of its own.

I downloaded aMSN several hours ago. It's a neat messenger with several flaws. I can't type any other foreign language except English and video chat seems to be not working. I've been playing around with it for few hours with no luck. The recipient only sees a blank white screen and I'm 'rejected' from the video chat connection.

Open up your application folder. Drag the aMSN icon (blue balloon-like character) into the app. folder. Delete whatever else is left (one click, hold command (apple logo), press delete).

Alright I seem to have it installed on my mac. But when I open it the only thing I see is a white box, and at the top (it's title) it reads aMSN-Offline. How does one get online?

Thanks again

Is this what you see?

Do you see Login As? If not look at the TOP BAR in OSX and look for Accounts.

aMSN is a bit buggy... OK, actually, it's very buggy.

I think the only reason people use it despite all its bugs and glitches is because it's one of the only apps for OS X that supports video chat, etc.
(And God knows how long it'll take Microsoft to update the official Messenger for Mac.)

Anyways.

For me, whenever I log into an account for the first time, the aMSN window will go blank like you described.
I'd have to quit it, then restart it, and log in again, and for some reason, it'll then work.
(And this problem won't occur again until I log into another account for the 1st time.)

So just quit and re-open. See if that works.

When I first start aMSN:

aMSN_login_window.png

Then when I enter all the stuff and click 'Log In'

I'll see a 'logging in' animation for a few seconds, then I'll see my contact list.

I have a feeling they are running a older version than your pic above. Turns out I was and just got 0.97RC1. Looks better.

Is the Username and password in correct? I have had no issues here connecting. Have you tried it with the MSN client from Microsoft? Does it connect? Wondering if there is a port blocked somewhere.

It seems to be using port 1863.
