my dad first got a ppc mac mini and i hated it, but got used to using it anyway cuz i had to help my mom who had only just gotten the hang of windows. then well i was neutral, and half a year ago my dad got an imac, intel, 20", and it was MUCH faster and better and prettier than the old one which still had lame pc hardware all over it. i always liked macs for the design and now i wanted to get one (maybe an old one) just to learn mac os and be able to judge it myself. a few months later i needed a laptop for school, and my dad being a recent switcher and mac fanatic wasnt hard to persuade to get the expensive and pretty macbook pro

I got a Mac for Photo and Video editing using Final Cut Pro, and just to try something different from windows, I think I am going to partition my windows laptop to run linux!

Took notice of a great friend who was a University IT specialist back in 1990. Told me it was 'more idiot proof'. Still using Macs so he must have been right!

i was sold when i found out Leopard was UNIX certified and POSIX compliant, due to the fact that i was used to Linux and did alot of bash scripting, and operating systems development

Unlike many here, I've not had a lot of issues with any of my Windows machines...nothing that would make me say they were "unstable" at least. And I've got nothing against Bill Gates either.

I have a HTPC downstairs that's been rock solid since I bought it nearly 4 years ago. Our main household PC from 1998 to 2005 was a Pentium II, 450 MHz, 256 Mb ram, 5 gig hard drive Gateway 2000  that served our modest needs without a hiccup. SEVEN YEARS and the only thing I ever did to it was max out the ram and put a new DVD burner in it.

My ascent to Macdom started with an innocent, leisurely stroll into the Apple store at the mall one Saturday. Don't really know why I walked in there. I wasn't in the market for another computer. I guess I just wasn't ready to walk back outside into that Georgia heat. But one look at that 24" iMac and it was lust at first iSight. And when that Mac genius - I don't know, but whenever I've heard the word "genius" used, it was always carried on a current of biting, scathing sarcasm - showed me that a Mac can run Windows (see paragraph 1), I knew that one day I'd own one. Fast forward to Christmas 2007 and here we are. It's only a matter of time - this summer, most likely - before iMac #2 takes the place of the (stable) PC that's in the upstairs office.

For me it was the cool design of the machines, of course with OS X being superior to anything else, especially Microsoft Windows, it was a no-brainer.

I just got tired of the trojans, viruses, spyware etc.. and even though I only got hit a few times with this garbage, I was always having to update one or the other security apps to stay on top of things, always reading about the latest threats, taking security measures, scanning etc...

But the worse part was, there I was not only having to buy some of these apps, but I was having to give up so much of my computers speed in order to keep these apps running all the time. I spent a lot of time just on security. So then I asked myself, is this what I have a computer for? Do I really want to spend the rest of my life trying to stay one step ahead so I don't get burned again? Not to mention my computer was so loud it drove me nuts.

Then Apple went Intel, and released BootCamp ... this was my cue to take the leap. If somehow I hated OSX, I could always install XP and I'd still have a nice piece of hardware. I bought an iMac and haven't looked back. XP is used only for a few games I play. My iMac is so quiet, I just love it. :D

I was happy enough with Tiger - it was good. But I am not going to downgrade, I will just wait and hope that the mega download 400MB+ of 10.5.2 will resolve the issues I have, and that have been around since November according to people on the Apple forums.

I am one of the few people who can't do a few of the basic things on windows. Like connect to the internet. It's crazy I know. I can program in a few languages (a little only though) and have fully used a few linux distros. And it really frustrated that simple tasks on windows are so hard (well for me anyways).

And the fact that these things are so easy to do on OS X sold me instantly. Plus I really an a fan of all in one desktops. And Apple make the only ones I have ever liked. The imacs. So my choice was easy for my 17 inch imac.

I needed a new laptop and I did not want Vista, I didn't think I knew enough about computers and stuff to work with linux, and when I started researching mac I liked what I found - though I was still nervous about it because I'd never used a mac and didn't really know what to expect. :)
But knowing that I could install win xp on it helped me to feel "safer" because I thought that if I didn't like the mac OS I'd just use the windows with the mac hardware.

I'm one of the few who didn't have many problems with windows, though. My laptop was pretty good, I never got a virus on it, etc. I just had to replace it because it was "old" (well, 4 years old).

ETA: I really liked the guided tour to Leopard and the look of the macbook was also a plus. :D

I got mine because I wanted to try out Unix, because it is way more reliable (no BSOD for instance) and it looks really nice and it's lighter than my old IBM laptop. I've not regreted for a second.

I never thought I would choose Mac, the only reason for the switch was .... 'Vista', thanks to Microsoft, I discovered Mac and never looked back.

I still have a PC just in-case I need to use program only for Windows, but I can't really remember the last time I switched it on. Never ever consider I would use BootCamp to run XP, who will need that if you have OS X? Can't call myself a Mac user if I am running Windows inside.

incorrect, if you try to customize a notebook as the same specs as a macbook or something they are usually more expensive as macs have core 2 duo processers which is great for laptops and would cost a fortune to match the superb specs of a mac to a pc

I just priced a Dell with almost exact spec's to my MacBook Pro with factory installed 4Gb RAM (which I know I can get cheaper aftermarket) and it's cheaper than what I paid for my MacBook Pro that only came with 2Gb RAM and I later upgraded to 4Gb aftermarket.

What is the main reason you got a mac?

Was it the user friendly interface, a specific application only available on OSX, or the price, or what?

The main reason I got a Mac was because I've had enough of M$ and all their constant updates, bugs, viruses and malware. I got tired of reinstalling the OS every 6 months to regain performance, tired of having to run antivirus software eating up system resources and costing me money every year to update a subscription. Tired of having to constantly figure out why this didn't work or why. I got tired of trying new programs and then uninstalling them only to find out it didn't uninstall properly and I would have to go into the system registry to fix things properly. Basically I think that M$ needs to completely scrap Windows and come up with something entirely new from the ground up. Maybe Windows 7 will be the answer but until then I'm very happy with my Mac.

First I bought an iPhone on July 6. I was so impressed with the quality and the way the iPhone worked that it made up my mind to buy a MBP a week later. I wanted to get the MBP to mostly use with my iPhone to sync and add music to. Been happy with it ever since!

Got tired of updating and maintaining my machine on a weekly basis while putting up with Microsoft's security crap. In honesty, I've been looking at Macs for quite awhile, but I've had some qualms with compatibility and price. But when Microsoft started with their "authentic" Windows initiative and started to require that I authenticate my copy of Windows every time that I had to download yet another security update or patch update so their software could run acceptably, that was the final straw. I understand that Microsoft is a business that is there to generate a profit, but it is not my calling in life to help them do so at my expense. On top of that, I got a chance to take a look at Vista... and folks... that is a windbag of an overbloated program typical of Microsoft products. I was looking at more of the same. So after all these years of working and operating in a Microsoft environment, I finally made the switch. And to be honest, I don't know why I waited so long. I still use a Microsoft product at work, (Windows Server 2003 on a thinclient network system), and I can tell you that it is one of the worse pieces of crap that I have ever had the misfortune to work with. The only people that like the OS are the IT people and system administrators, (for obvious reasons of control), but the end users, whether internal or external, absolutely LOATHE that piece of crap. And to make matters worse, our department has written a lot of our department applications on top of Internet Explorer browser and require for external and internal users to have to use it for our services. Boy!!!! What a JOY, (TIC). I was asked once by one of our IT people, (and I do mean straight face, while he was trying to resolve multiple issues with our system computers), what I didn't like about our new computers. I told him that if it smells like a raunchy pig, it looks like a raunchy pig, and it runs like an overblown raunchy pig, then I didn't care how much praise and windows dressing they gave the darn thing... it is still a pig! Now, we pretty much shake our heads and do the best that we can with the crap that we have.

Hopefully, we will never see Apple convert Mac OS into the crap that Windows has become.

LOL, kudos and well said. M$ Windows (2000, XP, Vista, Office 2007 and Office:Mac 2008) are nothing more than a Pig with lipstick.

We all know that it is a necessary evil to have MS Office products on standby for compatibility reasons but whenever possible I have switched entirely to Pages, Numbers and Mail.
