If, god forbid, I need to reinstall my OSX system. What is the best way to do it?

I know with Windows the only way to get a clean re-install was to reformat the drive and first backing up and settings, email etc that I needed to keep.

With OSX should I just put in the system disc and reinstall? Should I boot from the system disc and reinstall? What, if anything will get wiped when the system is re-installed?

Thanks?

The chances that you will ever have to reinstall your OS are slim to none.

If the extremely rare occasion does arise, you are correct in all that you need to do is boot from your system discs. You can choose the "Archive and Install" method which will preserve your files and applications while reinstalling a new copy of the OS.
