Sleep or Shutdown?

15" MacBook Pro (Early 2008) 2.4GHz 4GB RAM running 10.5.4
I use my MBP everyday and usually shuts it down before I went to bed. I'm just wondering that will it be okay to leave the MBP in sleep mode during the night? Will this affect the system performance etc. over the long run?
