adding subtitles for .avi movies

i have a movie in .avi format, but the language is in thai. is there a way i can add subtitles in english? i tried going through the quicktime preferences, but that didnt work. i have perian, but from what i understand it cannot add subtitles to a .avi file. any other suggestions??? will imovie do the trick?
