Looking for a nice DVD player

Well my old DVD player finally died a while back and now I'm going to need a new one for the new apartment. I want it to be able to play the majority of burned discs..maybe DivX discs also. I also have a 5.1 surround sound system so I'm going to need all those good inputs/outputs.

Anyone have any suggestions? I appreciate all the feedback.

Also, I'm not sure if I should have it play HD-DVDs since I don't have the best TV out there.

Haven't investigated DVD players for 2-3 years. Last one I bought, just went with what worked for me - Panasonic.

Main reason was their zoom features had everyone else beat hands down. Have multiple types of zoom that worked great, especially if you're still using a 4:3 aspect TV. It will take all the different widescreen aspects you'll run into on DVD's and zoom in incrementally to give you the most viewing area without chopping off much of the picture.
Have 2 of them now, although one was just replaced in my set up with an HD DVD machine I managed to get for $99.
The newest of the Pansonic (about 18 months old now) is attached to a 55" HDTV and it does provide an excellent picture.

As inexpensive as DVD players are nowadays, probably would not suggest the investment in the HD DVD unless you're planning to upgrade to an HDTV soon and can afford to spend the $40 per movie the dics are running right now (unless maybe you have netflix).

To be honest - all 3 of my in use TV's are 720p. Have only watched 3 HD DVD movies - all three back to back (and a scene at a time) comparing them with the regular DVD and I am hard pressed to really notice that much difference unless I am sitting there studying the picture instead of just enjoying the movie. Have done this both on the newest Toshiba player and on my Xbox 360 HD player.
