in windows you could 'defrag' your computer, and put everything in the hard drive back where it should be. my mac seems to be running wonderfully i've had it for about 6 months now...i don't notice any difference in speed, but i just wanna make sure I keep everything 'neat and clean' and my mac running in tip-top shape. any kind of 'defrag' program or 'disk clean up' which could be compariable to windows. Please help me out.

one more thing...really quick...

i have my own lil video company, and it was always just a side job where i would do a wedding every month or so...but now i got a couple jobs lined up where im gonna need more hard drive space in my computer...i got one project in there now, all the clips have been deleted just...everything for the final dvd version (23GB). (when i first got my mac I had 108 GB free...but after adding programs and stuff overtime..and with that dvd im slowing buring enough copies of i have 50 GB free...and as you all now...video takes up alot of hard disk space...what kinda of external hard drive would you recommend? or is this the best way to go?

thanks guys...
later!

Everytime you install something in OS X the last thing you see is Optimizing the Hard Drive....This is essentially defragging the computer. OS X automatically defrags small files constantly.....There really is no actual defragging utility.

The two sort of disk maintainance things I use are Repairing Permissions in Disk Utility and file system checks in single user mode

Any firewire or USB 2.0 External Hard drive should be fine but I recommend using that for storage of the files.....You are better off importing to the computers drive since that is a faster drive

Not when it comes to editting video. it is better to have your video in a separate drive when every possible.

Get the fastest external drive yu can afford. A 7200rpm drive would be best. Not knowing how much video work you will do in the future or how many project you maybe working on at a time.

Looking at actual through put the firewire is faster than usb. Firewire can maintain faster speeds longer than usb.

Get the largest drive you can afford. So something a long the lines of a 250GB, 7200rpm firewire drive.

Even though OSX constantly defragments files, it's still not that good. If you purchase and use Norton Systemworks, and you run their disk defragmenter, you'll notice that after several months of regular usage, your hard drive will be "lightly" to "moderately" fragmented.

I would not run any of the Norton products with OS X, unless you have a current back up.
