Ipod froze up

I was using my Ipod today and it just stopped. The backlight on the display is on and the song is displayed with the playing icon. It's just stuck there though and it will not shut off, change song, or anything. Any help would be great. Thanks.

can you do a reset?
if not leave it let the battery die and let it go into a deep sleep leave it for a few hours more and plug it back into your pc/mac and charge it should be okay after that.

Hold down menu and center button.

I tried resetting it, but none of the buttons gave any response. I let the battery run down and then plugged it into itunes and it was ok again? I don't know what caused it to happen, but my ipod is going on 3 years old now. I guess I'll have to start looking at a new one sooner or later. Thanks for the help.
