Hi,

I'll be soon purchasing a nice sexy lil' Macbook, but i have one question?

I'm starting to get into Video editting and i'm just wondering will the Macbook be suffcient for what i want it to do?
I will be doing short videos, small animations and editting home videos. Will the onboard graphics and 1gig Ram be ok? or would 2gig be more appropriate?

Any help will be much apprciated.

I think you should get 2GB of RAM and it should be fine.

The MB will be OK if you're not doing 3D stuff.
And you can probably get the 2GB of RAM cheaper afterwards than upgrading from 1 to 2 from Apple.

I agree with the 2Gig upgrade. That was my only upgrade and it made a huge difference!

Thanks for the replies guys.

So 2gig of Ram sounds like it's going to make a big difference and will probably 'future proof' it i guess.

You should probably get it from Apple with 1GB of RAM, then buy another gig from Crucial and install it yourself because it is ALOT cheaper.

I second that - 3rd party RAM will save you about $80, plus you could eBay the 1Gig they'll give you.

I have no idea why Apple charges so much for memory... :Angry-Tongue:

Coming from experience with this type of creative art, I'd suggest the MBP.. It has more raw power and dedicated graphics, top that with 2gb of ram and you'll fly.

I do a lot of Photoshop/Flash/Maya work and my iBook chugs, and it's pretty fast for a G4.

Just one word of caution—sometimes the cheapest solution is not the best. If you buy cheap mail-order ram and install it yourself, chances are you will be fine. But there is a slight possibility that your luck will not hold. I am proof of that. I had my dealer install 3rd-party ram when I bought my MacBook. It is guaranteed for life. It was cheaper than Apple's yet more expensive than mail order. Six weeks later I start getting Kernel Panics. Ran hardware test—bad ram module! Dealer replaced. What are you going to do if your mail order ram craps out?

I thought you had to toss the 1GB that comes with the laptop, then buy a fresh new 2GBs? :|

Yeah, I think for light editing, the MB is plenty sufficient. I played around with iMovie a bit on my G4 mini, and the lowest-end MacBook runs circles around a G4.

Yeah I think you are right. I think the 1GB comes in 2 512K modules.

You can't really go wrong with Crucial memory.

This is why I always recommend buying RAM that has the manufacturers name on it. There are only a handful of manufacturers. Crucial, Corsair, Kingston and a few others that manufacture all RAM. Everyone else is buying their RAM from these manufacturers and then put their own name on it or sell it as no name stuff because they buy from multiple manufacturers, whomever has the cheapest parts at the time.

There is a reason why these sticks do not have the actual manufacturers name on them. For the most part, because they did not pass their testing. The sticks work, but not up to the more rigid standards of the manufacturer. These get sold to other companies for re-branding.

As with any electronics - no matter what name is on the package - some non-working parts will get through.

The standard size of hard disk in the MB's is quite limiting, might want to upgrade that or by a bif external (preferably firewire)

haha

Yeah really. I paid $48 for a 1gb stick from crucial...

Anyways...a Macbook has a tiny screen...if you insist on not looking at a mbp or can't afford one, atleast look at an external monitor to use....I mean, it's nearly impossible to find an lcd under 17" and you can get a 19" for very cheap...It'll save your eyes and you won't have to constantly scroll around the screen.
