• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Sure... Many DV cams will let you transfer video via USB instead of firewire. The trouble is, for some reason they are almost all USB 1.1 and thus the transfer rate is so low, you're going to be disgusted with what you get (I believe the video transfered, assuming you can do it, will be 320x240 at 15fps rather than the standard 640x480 at 30fps you will get via firewire).

Any reason you can't use firewire?

FYI, firewire and DV are not interchangeable terms. Firewire is an interface, and DV is the format used by digital camcorders to store video onto tape.

IIRC, iMove will only work with Firewire. It may have changed, but not that I have heard.

Shame. Still, you wouldn't have been pleased with the quality you'd have gotten from the USB connection. I know that in the states, USB cables used to be fairly expensive, but they've really become a bit of a commodity item lately. I assume by your use of the word lead that you're in the UK, and I can't imagine you shouldn't be able to find one for around ten quid over there.
