itunes - dead after update

after updating the itunes and quicktime on my ibook last weekend via software update i can't seem to open it up. this morning i checked for updates and found another one for both itunes and quicktime. i updated hoping that it will bring itunes back to life but no such luck. quicktime fires up alright but not itunes! help me!
