My Macbook randomly shuts down without any kind of warning. Has anyone else had this problem or know what might be causing the problem? I'm guessing that it's a hardware problem and not software because sometimes it shuts down when it's not in use. Could it be the battery? I bought it around Christmas time so it's a fairly new computer. I would appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanks...

Does it run especially warm? Sometimes a random power off can be due to overheating. There is a known issue where some MacBook and MacBook Pro models have excessive thermal compound, which makes the cooling mechanisms ineffective. That might be the issue.
