This may be blatantly obvious, but I have searched and cannot find any information. I got an ibook snow model off ebay. The internal sticker says "500mhz/128mb/15gb/CD" but under OS 10.2.3, "About this Mac" displays speed as "400 mhz".

Any ideas for a Mac newbie? I was under the impression the snow books debuted as 500 mhz machines...

iBook r know for failling logic boards..
Maybe the logic board died under the previous users ownership and he down graded on the logicboard....
Because they do cost an absolute fortune!!!!!
for my ibook I was quoted £310 + VAT and fitting charges.. (so around £400!!)
but that is for a 1.2GHz
The smaller the spec the lower the cost....

Perhaps they got ripped off and the repairer put in a cheaper board and charged the same?????

who no's... i'd send a message to the person you bought it off questioning it....
very strange tho..

That is a weird one, the white G3 iBooks did start out life as 500 MHz machines. The 400 MHz G3 chips were used in the fruity colored iMacs. And unless the previous owner was an absolute wizard with a soldering gun I doubt he could have popped in one of those processors! I would love to see a utility that measured the actual clock speed of a processor.

That's my next step...to benchmark the "400mhz" processor...or I may just gut it for parts...
