• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

Hi,

I'm a new convert to Mac, I have a macbook 2.16GHz. After buying this I can't afford to buy a digital camcorder for awhile and need to keep using my old analogue one.

My question is what is the best way to get footage from my camcorder (which only has S-Video output) onto my mac for some simple editing in iMovie and then burn it/compress it/whatever...

What hardware/software would be best - I'm also a student on a tight enough budget.

Any advise would be great. Thanks.

You can check out the El Gato products, used for video capture on OS X, can't guarantee any cheap prices...but worth a look.

I know on Geekbrief (a tech podcast available on itunes) the host did a spot on a piece of hardware that allows you to do the same type transfer you want, and it may have been somewhat less expensive than the El Gato, you might look through the older shows, maybe even a couple months back and see what you find. the episodes are only 3 - five minutes each.

Best,

Brian
