Video file formats to GIFs?

Is there any software on Mac or any other software that enables me to convert video file formats (MOV, WMV, MPEG etc) to moving GIF files?

I personally never came across an app like that but, assuming it does exist, I would bet the results would be appalling, seeing how .gif renders certain images.

We are presently learning HTML and web page creation at school and by mistake I saved an image that should have been saved as .jpg as a .gif and the image was so totally yucky! :p
