Does the remote control that comes with the macbook pro turn on the laptop? Can it put the laptop to sleep?

If not, is there anyway to configure it so that it can?

15" MBP 2.4ghz; 4gb ipod nano; dell axim x51
If i hold the play button for about 5 seconds it puts my mbp to sleep and same thing to wake it up, not sure about turning it on though.
