what are color labels for?

when i right click on a file, there's an option to assign it a color label. What's that for? thanks

It's something that is pretty useful for file organization.

Exactly as you like

For example, let's assume you're doing some image manipulation work for a customer.

You can determine that all your Photoshop drawings from now on are labled red. And those, which are final and customer approved are blue.

Now when you look at the files list in Finder you can easily see how many images are ready and how much work still left to do.

You can apply the same logic to any file type. Makes it a bit easier to find arrays of same file types.

You can also use color labels as filters for data backups.

In whatever way color coding files would work for you!

Theres no specific use. Its just there to help a person organize their files in whatever way those colors would help them to do so.

I find it handy when tagging music en-mass.

I use to keep track of what files I have processed, and which are newly uploaded by a client. Good for tracability!

I use it to mark folders I go into regularly, so I can just scroll down the list and dive in without reading anything. In Preferences you can even label the colours with your own descriptions.

so if I color code a music file or a video file all other video and music files will follow suit?

Yes I do that as well. On the web servers, I label the path to the actual websites. So In column view, I can quickly zip right to the wwwroot.

So only two folders actually get labeled. But that simple act weeds out the other dozens of folders. So it takes less concentration - no need to read all the folders - you just visually follow the yellow label road.

I don't believe the colors are tied to any specific file type, but rather are applied by the user to files that make sense for them.

I think it would be great though to see color coding at the file type level (and if I'm mistaken above, would love to be shown otherwise! )
